About Uniswap

Uniswap is one of the largest decentralized exchanges, a service that lets people swap one crypto token for another straight from their own wallet, without a company holding their funds or matching orders. It started on Ethereum and now runs on many other networks. UNI is its governance token: holders vote on changes to the protocol and on how its treasury is used, and in late 2025 they voted to route protocol fees into permanently destroying (burning) UNI.

Uniswap was built by Hayden Adams, a mechanical engineer who began learning Ethereum programming after being laid off from Siemens in 2017. With an Ethereum Foundation grant, he launched the first version on Ethereum in November 2018. His company, Uniswap Labs, develops the software and the main website and app, and has raised money from major venture firms. A separate non-profit, the Uniswap Foundation, funds the wider community. The UNI token arrived in 2020 through a surprise giveaway to past users.

Instead of an order book, Uniswap uses pools of tokens supplied by users, and a formula sets prices from each pool's contents; suppliers earn a share of fees. Anyone can create a pool for any token, which makes it open but also means scam and copycat tokens are common. People who provide funds can lose value when prices shift sharply. Regulators have also scrutinised it: Uniswap Labs settled with the CFTC in 2024, and the SEC investigated it before dropping the case in 2025.
