About TRON

Tron is a blockchain network whose coin, TRX, is used to pay for transactions and to vote for the operators who run the network. It is widely used for moving the stablecoin USDT, which Tether began issuing on Tron in 2019, because transfers there are fast and cheap. Tron also hosts decentralized apps, lending services and tokens created by its community.

Tron was founded by entrepreneur Justin Sun. The Singapore-based Tron Foundation raised about $70 million in a 2017 token sale, shortly before China banned such sales. TRX first existed as a token on Ethereum and moved to its own blockchain in June 2018. Sun later bought BitTorrent, and in late 2021 he stepped down as CEO while governance passed to a community body called TRON DAO.

Tron uses delegated proof of stake: TRX holders vote to elect 27 Super Representatives who produce blocks. Fees are paid through network resources called energy and bandwidth, and TRX burned for fees can offset new issuance. Critics note that its early whitepaper copied other projects without credit, that the SEC sued Sun in 2023 before settling in 2026, and that investigators say criminals often use USDT on Tron to move funds.
