About Sui
SUI is the native coin of Sui, a blockchain designed for apps that need to feel as quick as ordinary websites, such as trading platforms, games, digital collectibles and payments. SUI is used to pay transaction fees and is staked with the validators that run the network, earning rewards in return. The network also hosts dollar stablecoins and a growing set of lending and trading apps.
Sui was built by Mysten Labs, a company founded in 2021 by former engineers from Meta's blockchain research team, who had worked on the abandoned Diem digital currency. The founders are Evan Cheng, Sam Blackshear, Adeniyi Abiodun, George Danezis and Kostas Chalkias. Backed by venture firms including Andreessen Horowitz, the team announced Sui in 2022 and launched its main network in May 2023. The Sui Foundation supports the wider ecosystem.
Instead of tracking account balances like most blockchains, Sui treats every asset as a separate object, so unrelated transactions can be processed side by side. Apps are written in Move, a programming language meant to prevent common coding mistakes. Supply is capped at 10 billion SUI. Critics highlight several multi-hour network outages, and a 2025 incident in which validators froze stolen funds, which raised questions about how decentralized the network really is.
