About XRP
XRP is the native currency of the XRP Ledger, a public blockchain designed for fast, low-cost payments. It can act as a bridge between different currencies when money is sent abroad, and Ripple, the company most closely linked to it, has long promoted it to banks and payment firms for cross-border transfers. The ledger can also carry other tokens, and Ripple issues its own dollar stablecoin, RLUSD. People also hold and trade XRP as an investment.
Engineers David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto began building the XRP Ledger in 2011, hoping to avoid the energy waste of Bitcoin mining, and it went live in June 2012. Together with Chris Larsen they formed the company now called Ripple, and the founders gave it 80 billion of the 100 billion XRP created at launch. Ripple is separate from the ledger itself, which is open source and run by independent validators.
Instead of mining, the XRP Ledger reaches agreement through validators that each participant chooses to trust, confirming payments within seconds. All XRP existed from day one, and Ripple releases its holdings from escrow on a monthly schedule. Critics argue that Ripple's large stake and influence over the recommended validator list make XRP more centralised than Bitcoin, and a US securities lawsuit over Ripple's XRP sales hung over the token from 2020 until 2025.
