About Polygon Ecosystem Token
POL is the main token of Polygon, a network built to make Ethereum-style apps cheaper and faster to use. Its best-known chain, Polygon PoS, handles payments, stablecoin transfers, games and apps such as the prediction market Polymarket, and connects back to Ethereum. POL pays the transaction fees on that chain and is staked by the validators who run it. It replaced the older MATIC token, one for one, in September 2024.
The project started in 2017 as Matic Network, founded in India by software engineers Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, Anurag Arjun and Mihailo Bjelic. It sold tokens through Binance's Launchpad in 2019, brought its network online in 2020 and renamed itself Polygon in February 2021 to cover a wider range of scaling tools. The company Polygon Labs develops the technology, and Nailwal has headed the Polygon Foundation since June 2025.
Polygon PoS runs on proof of stake: validators lock up POL, staked through contracts on Ethereum, to produce blocks, and a 2025 upgrade cut the time for payments to become final to about five seconds. POL's supply grows by roughly 2% a year for ten years to reward validators and fund a community treasury. Critics point to that dilution, fierce competition among Ethereum scaling networks, and a 2023 SEC lawsuit that described MATIC as a security.
