About Monero

Monero (XMR) is a digital currency built around privacy. Unlike Bitcoin, where anyone can look up which address sent how much to whom, Monero hides the sender, the receiver and the amount of every payment by default. People use it to pay for things or move value without leaving a public trail, which appeals to privacy-minded users but has also made it popular in illegal markets and ransomware demands.

Monero went live in April 2014 as a copy of Bytecoin, an earlier project based on the CryptoNote privacy design, whose own launch had raised concerns about coins being quietly pre-mined. It was first called BitMonero and was announced on the BitcoinTalk forum by a pseudonymous user, before a volunteer community took it over and renamed it. There is no company or foundation in charge; development is carried out by an open group of contributors funded largely through community donations.

Monero mixes each payment with decoy inputs (ring signatures), uses one-time stealth addresses, and hides amounts with a technique called RingCT. Its mining algorithm, RandomX, is designed to run well on ordinary computer processors so that specialised mining rigs have little edge. Main risks: regulators dislike untraceable money, so many large exchanges have dropped it, which makes it harder to buy and sell. In 2025 a single mining pool briefly claimed most of its computing power, raising questions about network security.
