About Internet Computer
Internet Computer (ICP) is a blockchain designed to run entire applications, including websites, stored data and back-end services, directly on the network rather than on conventional cloud servers. The ICP token is used to vote on and stake in the network's governance, and it is converted into cycles, a unit that pays for computing and storage. The project now also promotes the network as a home for apps built by AI through its Caffeine tool.
ICP is developed by the DFINITY Foundation, a Swiss non-profit set up in Zurich in October 2016 by Dominic Williams, who had started sketching the idea of a world computer around 2015. DFINITY held an early public token sale in February 2017 and private funding rounds in 2018, and says more than $500 million has gone into research and development. The main network went live in May 2021.
The network is divided into subnets, groups of independent machines that each reach agreement on their own, tied together by chain-key cryptography so results can be checked with a single signature. App developers, not users, prepay computing costs, and token holders govern through the Network Nervous System. Critics point to modest real-world adoption, and the token has lost most of its value since trading began in 2021. DFINITY's Mission70 plan aims to sharply cut new token issuance in 2026.
