About Hedera Hashgraph
HBAR is the native coin of Hedera, a public network aimed largely at businesses. People and companies pay small HBAR fees to send payments, create their own tokens, run smart contracts, or stamp records with a trusted time and order, which is useful for things like supply-chain tracking and audit logs. HBAR is also staked to help secure the network. Hedera markets itself on speed, low and predictable fees, and low energy use.
Hedera grew out of hashgraph, a method for reaching agreement between computers invented by computer scientist Leemon Baird, who co-founded the project with Mance Harmon. Their company Swirlds held the original patents. Hedera was unveiled in 2018 and opened its main network to the public in September 2019. Instead of anonymous miners, it is overseen by a governing council of large organizations such as Google, IBM and Boeing, which have also run the network's computers.
Rather than stacking transactions into blocks, hashgraph has computers share information with each other in a gossip-like pattern and then reach agreement on the order of events, backed by proof of stake. The full supply of 50 billion HBAR was created at the start. Critics argue that relying on a small council of corporations makes Hedera less decentralized than many rivals, and that big-name members do not necessarily use or endorse HBAR. A 2023 smart contract exploit also stole tokens from several apps.
