About Dogecoin

Dogecoin is a cryptocurrency that began as a joke based on the Doge internet meme, which features a Shiba Inu dog. Its coin, DOGE, is mostly used for tipping, small payments, charity drives and speculative trading, and it has one of the most recognizable brands in crypto. Its popularity has often been driven by online communities and by celebrity attention, especially from Elon Musk.

IBM software engineer Billy Markus and Adobe marketer Jackson Palmer created Dogecoin, launching it on December 6, 2013, using code based on Luckycoin and Litecoin. It quickly caught on as a tipping currency on Reddit. Both founders stepped back from development in 2014, and Palmer later left crypto altogether. Volunteer developers kept the software going, and the Dogecoin Foundation was revived in 2021 and later created a corporate arm, House of Doge.

Dogecoin uses proof-of-work mining with the Scrypt algorithm and one-minute blocks, and since 2014 it has been merge-mined alongside Litecoin, which adds security. Unlike Bitcoin it has no supply cap: 10,000 new DOGE are created with every block, about 5 billion a year, so the supply keeps growing. Critics note that it has had few major technical upgrades and that its price often swings sharply on social media posts rather than on changes to the network.
