About BNB

BNB is the native coin of BNB Chain, a blockchain network created by Binance, one of the largest crypto exchanges. It pays the transaction fees on BNB Smart Chain, where people use decentralised apps for trading, lending and games, and validators stake it to help run the network. Binance has also long used BNB inside its exchange, for example to offer perks to holders. It started as the exchange's own token before becoming the fuel of a separate blockchain.

BNB was created by Binance, the exchange founded by Changpeng Zhao, known as CZ, and first sold to the public in a token sale in mid-2017 as a token on Ethereum. In 2019 it moved to Binance's own blockchain, and in 2020 Binance Smart Chain added support for smart contracts; both networks were rebranded as BNB Chain in 2022. Zhao stepped down as Binance chief executive in 2023 after pleading guilty in the US and was pardoned in 2025.

BNB Smart Chain uses a system called proof of staked authority, in which a fairly small group of validators, backed by staked BNB, take turns producing blocks in well under a second, keeping fees low. Binance regularly burns BNB to shrink the supply from 200 million toward a target of 100 million. Critics say the network is more centralised than rivals and closely tied to a single company, and its cross-chain bridge suffered a major exploit in 2022.
